Staying loyal to United

TALENTED teenager Alex Murphy has pledged his future to Galway United despite attracting interest from cross-channel clubs.

The 17-year-old, who signed a professional contract with United last August, is not having his head turned by these enquiries.

Instead, Murphy will be joining up with the rest of the squad for pre-season next week ahead of United’s First Division campaign which starts at the end of February.

Making his debut as a 16-year-old against Athlone Town in June, the former Corrib Rangers player went on to make 12 senior appearances for the Tribesmen last season,

His displays earned him a call-up to the Irish under-18 squad in 2021, notably captaining his country in a 7-1 victory over Malta in December when he also scored.

Murphy’s progress has caught the attention of English clubs, but has expressed his delight in being a Galway United player.

“Last season was very surreal, everything happened so quickly. I am grateful for everything that has happened so far and, hopefully, we can kick on again this year,” Murphy said.

“I signed with United at U15 level and I got called into training with the first team two seasons ago. I made my debut against Athlone in the last campaign and it has kicked on from there.

“All the players helped me settle in, it is a massive step up from underage football. The game is so much quicker and you have to be better on the ball. The physical side of it is also very important and you have to be mentally prepared for the game.”

Murphy paid tribute to United manager John Caulfield for helping his progress.“John has been great for me. He is the one that has given me all these opportunities. I am grateful to him for doing that.

“I am looking forward to this season, we have a good squad building. Hopefully, we can push on and get promoted.”
