Senior football championship reverts to three groups of six

THE draws for the 2022 senior, intermediate and junior football championships were made as part of the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta festivities held in Leitir Móir over the Bank Holiday weekend and those looking to go far in the race for Frank Fox will have to prove their mettle early on with the draw yielding some tough fixtures for many of the teams involved.
The senior championship has seen a format change once again as we say goodbye to the unusual system seen last year which saw the teams in groups 4A and 4B cross-play without actually facing off against those in their group. Instead, it’s a return to the format of three groups of six teams as used in 2019.
GAA President Larry McCarthy was on hand to make the draws in Leitir Móir on Monday, but the locals won’t be too thankful after he placed them in an incredibly tough-looking Group 1. Alongside Naomh Anna, Leitir Móir, who are returning to the senior ranks having won last year’s intermediate championship, are four of the eight sides who reached the quarter-finals in the 2021 senior championship – Corofin, Moycullen, Oughterard and Tuam Stars. An Spidéal round off the group of six.
