Corofin celebrate after completing the All-Ireland club three-in-a-row at Croke Park in January. They will be bidding for a record-breaking eighth Galway title on the trot in 2020.

WITH Galway’s senior and U20 footballers flying high at the moment, there was a feel-good factor surrounding the draws for the 2020 county senior and intermediate championships last Thursday evening.

No doubt, All-Ireland champions Corofin, who are seeking to win a remarkable eight-in-a-row of county titles, will be content with their draw, having avoided the four teams — Tuam Stars, Mountbellew/Moylough, Salthill/Knocknacarra and St. Michael’s — that they played over the last seven county finals.

They have also managed to steer clear of Annaghdown and Moycullen, two teams that have the potential and raw talent to pose a threat to Corofin’s county crown.

Corofin will face Killanin, Claregalway, Barna, An Cheathru Rua and St. James’ in Group C and the champions will see it as an opportunity to introduce some more of their rising stars to senior championship football.

Results in recent years back this up. Although Claregalway were competitive against Corofin last year (2-18 to 2-11), Corofin handed out drubbings to St. James’ (5-21 to 0-11) and An Cheathru Rua (5-16 to 1-8) in 2019 and 2018 respectively.

Although Barna, after surviving last year’s relegation battle, have not faced Corofin since 2011, it took Corofin extra-time to beat them, 0-13 to 0-11, on that occasion. A year previous, Corofin also struggled to overcome them, squeezing by on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-9.

Corofin’s last championship meeting against Killanin will hold no fond memories, with Killanin doing a number on them when they last played against each other in 2005. Killanin won that game 1-11 to 1-6, with Richie Fahey scoring 1-1, Stephen Kavanagh kicking six points and experienced duo Gary Fahey and Kevin Walsh producing big games.
