Residents in fear of anti-social ‘yobbos’

Anti-social gangs are striking fear into city residents, with older and vulnerable people being especially on edge after a vicious assault in Eyre Square.

That’s according to City Councillor Martina O’Connor who said a member of her own family suffered severe injuries and had to be hospitalised following a knife assault in the city centre recently.

“Up around Eyre Square just seems to be a place where these groups congregate. It’s a very busy area and all you’ve to do is stand there for a while and you see how there are hundreds of people passing though, but there’s a seedy feeling about the place and that shouldn’t be the case,” said Cllr O’Connor.

Her cousin had recovered from the stabbing incident on August 13, but because the assault took place at 10.20pm, while there were still plenty of people around and buses were still operating, it served as a warning that more needed to be done to tackle anti-social behaviour around the Square.

“I’ve been contacted by a number of retired people who rely on the buses 100 per cent for their transport, and they’re saying they feel uncomfortable up there.

“The elderly had been nervous as it was, but they don’t expect someone to be nearly killed where they wait for the bus,” said the Green Party councillor.
