Planning Galway City's future up to 2050

From this week's Galway City Tribune - A community pier at the Docks, a public housing scheme at Renmore Barracks and a senior housing development with an adjacent creche on Queen Street are among the proposals included in Galway Chamber’s ‘Vision 2050’.
The Chamber launched a public consultation this week, calling for the city’s residents and businesses to make their mark on a vision for Galway 30 years from now.
As part of that process, a visualisation of how the city’s skyline might appear in 2050 – created in partnership with Architecture on the Edge and architect Brett Mahon – was unveiled.
Included on the graphic is a completed outer harbour; reconfigured docks; a light rail network; and a number of key developments – some already planned for such as Augustine Hill at Ceannt Station, and others suggestive of what’s possible such as a number of skyscrapers.
Speaking at the launch, Deputy President of Galway Chamber Dermot Nolan, said the objective at this stage was to ‘evoke a response’ from the public.
“We don’t want anybody to say that this is Galway Chamber’s view of what Galway should be – we want the public to engage and have their say,” said Mr Nolan who is also chair of the Chamber’s Evolving Galway Committee that’s steering this process.
While to proposals drawn up in conjunction with Technical University Dublin and Architecture on the Edge provide a suggestive view, the final document to be published later this year will be informed by what the public says, he added.
