Penalty points to be quashed due to lack of speed limit signage

From this week's Galway City Tribune - Motorists caught for speeding on the Coast Road to Oranmore will have their fines refunded and penalty points quashed, according to a local councillor.

Cllr Alan Cheevers said the Council’s failure to install new speed limit signage on the route after the limit dropped from 80km/h to 50km/h had resulted in a significant number of people unintentionally breaking the limit.

And with a ‘Go Safe’ van frequenting the busy artery, many of those travelling out of the city towards Oranmore had received Fixed Charge Penalty Notices (FCPN) in the post – resulting in outrage from the affected motorists.

“The speed limit dropped from 80 to 50km/h and the first issue was the Council was slow to take down the old signage. Then when they did, a 50km/h sign wasn’t put up."

As a result, many motorists were ticketed and contacted local representatives, as well as appealing their fines to the Fixed Charge Processing Office in Thurles.

“They came back to me to say that anybody who received a fine between January 31 and February 22 will have the points taken off their licence and the fines refunded,” said Cllr Cheevers.
