Bradley Bytes - A sort of political column by Dara Bradley

The Greens are seeing red over the Blueshirts. The Green Party’s Galway West general election candidate, Pauline O’Reilly, is particularly angry with the Fine Gael Government.

They’re all fur coat and no knickers when it comes to the environment, she reckons.

Pauline and other environmentalists have described Fine Gael’s ‘Green Week’ as “laughable”.

Galway West FG TD, Hildegarde Naughton, said Green Week was an attempt by her party to raise public awareness about ways to go green and to convince the public of the need to tackle climate change. However, this sudden concern for the environment and climate change was a “smokescreen”, said Pauline.

The Justice Minister produces more hot air than your average transatlantic flight of a Boeing 737. But instead of keeping Charlie Flanagan quiet for a whileen, which would drastically reduce their carbon footprint, Fine Gael was preaching to the rest of us that we should unplug our phones to save energy. They also called on manufacturers to cut down on plastics.

A very noble suggestion, but perhaps their call to save the planet would carry more weight if they hadn’t blocked almost every environmentally responsible bill that has come before the Oireachtas.

Pauline pointed out that FG firstly opposed and then blocked the Greens’ Waste Reduction Bill, which would introduce a bottle return scheme and ban some single-use plastics.

Green Week began with an FG video about banning microbeads. This despite FG having blocked Green Party and Labour Party bills to ban these types of small plastics.

“On the one hand it is laughable,” said Pauline. “on the other deeply deceptive.” She added: “It’s time for Fine Gael to stop the spin and make truly responsible choices.”
