No cameras on the Castle

Efforts by AIB Lynch’s Castle to provide security cameras on its Shop Street façade have been refused – on the grounds that it would have a detrimental impact on the medieval building.
And when the bank sought to provide cameras on a pole on the opposite side of the street, they were informed that this was not possible because of data protection legislation.
However, AIB have been granted permission to erect two cameras on the Abbeygate Street side and well as replacing five existing cameras at the bank – just not on Shop Street.
This is despite the Garda advice to AIB of the need for cameras on Shop Street, given that it is a financial institution.
Planning permission was sought by the bank for two new cameras on Shop Street, two further cameras on Abbeygate Street and the replacement of five existing cameras.
But Galway City Council ruled that the Shop Street cameras would have “a detrimental impact on the setting, character and appearance of the protected structure and recorded monument.”
The local authority also stated that it would have an adverse impact on the City Core Architectural Conservation Area and would be contrary to proper planning and development of the area.
Consultant archaeologist, Richard Crumlish, in a submission to Galway City Council, stated that the proposed works involving the fixing of two security cameras to the Shop Street elevation could potentially impact on the medieval fabric of Lynch’s Castle.
