Filming on a new TV crime thriller by a well-known Galway writer will begin in the city and Connemara this March – and the production company is looking for local extras to feature in it.

The Yank is a new six-part psychological thriller written by Eithne Verling, a former Galway City Council employee and former Director of Galway Museum.

Ms Verling, a Limerick native, left her position in Galway Museum to pursue this TV opportunity in July of last year.

The new series is set in Connemara and features ‘Star Trek: Voyager’ and ‘Orange is the New Black’ actor Kate Mulgrew, a co-writer of the project.

She plays the leading role of detective Nora Hill on a career break from the New York Police Department (NYPD) following a traumatic event and she moves to her family home in Connemara.

“Expecting a change of pace, Nora is unexpectedly pulled into a murder investigation involving a female climate activist. As she goes head-to-head with a ruthless environmental magnate, putting those closest to her at risk, she is forced to confront her personal demons head on.

“As the investigation builds to a tense and savage climax, it pushes Nora and the squad into a thrilling hunt for the killer,” according to the series blurb.

The show is being produced by Two Cities Television (Blue Lights, Amadeus) and Keeper Pictures for RTÉ. It received some funding from Screen Ireland.

West Coast Casting is looking for extras to take part

Filming on The Yank begins later this March in Galway City and Connemara, and West Coast Casting is looking for extras to take part.

Anyone who wants to be an extra on the show, is asked to email [email protected].

Aspiring extras looking for a spot in the production should include details such as name, age, contact number, costume size, their location, two recent photos, and their availability between March and June of this year.

Kate and Eithne have a connection that pre-dates their involvement in this project because back in 2019, the pair shared a stage at a First Thought Talk in the Galway International Arts Festival.

Then, the actress spoke movingly about returning to her hometown in Ohio to spend time with and care for her parents, after her father was diagnosed with aggressive lung cancer and her mother with atypical Alzheimer’s.

That led to her memoir How to Forget, tracing an unexpected journey of loss, betrayal, and the transcendent nature of a daughter’s love for her parents.
