Maree and Moycullen out of luck in weekend league ties

IT was a disappointing weekend for Galway’s national league basketball sides as Maree’s senior women’s team were the only outfit to claim a win as they continue to lead the win the Southern Conference of Division 1.
There were Superleague defeats for Moycullen and Maree’s senior men’s sides; for NUIG Mystics in the Women’s Superleague; and for Titans in the Men’s Division 1.

Moycullen were given a lesson in offensive efficiency on Saturday,as they fell to a ruthless Killester outfit in Dublin, their third consecutive defeat.
Despite a solid effort from the visiting Galway side, the home team proved too big and too sharp for Moycullen, winning the game by 25 points.
Killester raced into an early 12 point lead four minutes into the game; but led by Cian Nihill and Dylan Cunningham, Moycullen prevented the gap from widening, and they managed to cut the deficit to nine (52-43) at half-time.
However, the effort to stay in touch told on the visitors in the second-half, with Killester once again stretching the gap between the sides, finding scores easy to come by. Things do not get any easier this weekend as Moycullen head north to face table-toppers Belfast Star, who are on the run of five straight wins.

Maree’s Men’s Superleague side undid all their good work from beating defending league champions, UCD, two weeks ago when slipping to a six-point loss to the previously winless Neptune in Cork on Saturday night.
Despite twice enjoying 10-point leads, Maree were unable to close out the game as their two-game winning run came to an end, although they stay third from bottom after Moycullen’s heavy defeat saw them slip below their Galway rivals in the league table.
