Man misses Galway court appearance over numerous violent offences

The prison services were unable to produce the man in court who had pled guilty to arson attacks and possession of a firearm
A 33-year-old Mayo man who admitted his role in a series of arson and firearms offences in Galway could not be produced in court for ‘good reason’.
Wayne Cooney, with a former address at 7 Pearse Terrace, Westport, Co Mayo, was due to appear at Galway Circuit Court for sentencing in relation to a number of violent offences which were committed in June 2022.
However, after the case was called, Judge Brian O'Callaghan said he had no option but to adjourn the matter after being informed that the Prison Services were unable to produce Cooney in court.
Judge O'Callaghan told the courtroom: "I can emphasise he was not produced for good reason".
Judge O'Callaghan also told defence barrister, Colm Smyth SC, that a report from the Probation Services had been made available to the court.
He said the Service wished to have no further engagement with the accused and there is no need for any further reports prior to sentencing.
Cooney was further remanded in custody to appear before the court again on January 15, 2027.
In the case, Cooney had already pleaded guilty to an arson attack at a property at Ballydavid Cottages, Athenry, on June 20, 2022.
He had also earlier admitted his part in arson attacks at two properties at 98 and 99 Garran Árd, Doughiska on June 21, 2022.
Cooney is also before the court for sentencing after he had earlier pleaded guilty to the possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life at Bohermore in Galway City on June 15, 2022 - an offence contrary to Section 15 of the Firearms Act 1925.
