A lucky group of Galway punters have got their new year off to the perfect start, by winning over €67,000 from a €45 bet.

The nine-man syndicate, based out of Crowes Bar in Bohermore, placed €5 each on a football and rugby accumulator on New Year’s Eve, beating odds of over 1,400/1 to secure their win.

Their bet included nine matches in total: eight English Premier League football games, and the Connacht vs Munster clash in the Guinness Pro12, which was played at the Sportsground on New Year’s Eve. The bet was placed at the Bar One Racing bookmakers on Prospect Hill.

Maria Maguire, who is the manager of Bar One Racing, was also the person who took the original wager from the group, and she was only delighted to see it come in for them.

“They bet on nine games in total, and once the results of the football matches had come in, I’m sure the guys were up in Crowes biting their nails,” she said.

The last result the group needed was for Munster to beat Connacht by six points or more.

When the final whistle blew in the rugby match, and Munster had beaten Connacht 16-9, Ms Maguire was more than happy to see the syndicate pick up the biggest group-win her branch has ever given out.

“Some of the bets they had were amazing. For example, they needed Man Utd to be drawing their game at halftime, and to be winning by full-time, and that came through earlier in the afternoon,” she said.

Bar One paid out the winnings just after eight on New Year’s Eve. The store also organised a celebration for the group the following Saturday.
