The tight-knit community of Woodquay has rallied to support a pensioner whose savings were stolen by a heartless thief.

76-year-old Robert Williams, affectionately known as Scottish Bob or Scottish Bobbie, was robbed of his savings by a thief who broke into his apartment on Eyre Street in October.

Mr Williams had saved hundreds of euro and pounds sterling over the year, which he had planned to use to buy Christmas presents for his great-grandchild whom he planned to visit back home in Glasgow this Christmas. But all his cash savings were stolen following a break-in at his Woodquay home.

It is understood Galway Gardaí are investigating the theft, and examining CCTV footage, which shows someone entering his apartment.

In the meantime, Scottish Bob’s friends and ‘family’ in Woodquay, has rallied to help him out.

Darragh Murphy, manager of Hole in the Wall, where Scottish Bob is a regular, has set up a GoFundMe page to try to raise money to replace the amount that was stolen.

“Every time he had a few euros, he would put it aside or buy sterling with it,” Mr Murphy explained. “He is planning to go home to Scotland for Christmas and was saving for that, and to buy his great-grandchild Christmas presents. Then someone broke into his home and took the savings. Scottish Bob was really disheartened by it.
