TWO Galway rowers went into local sporting immortality in Tokyo in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Aifric Keogh from Na Forbacha and Fiona Murtagh from Moycullen have become the first ever Galway athletes to secure Olympic Games medals – the pinnacle of sporting achievement.

Keogh and Fiona Murtagh teamed up with Eimear Lambe and Emily Hegarty to do Ireland proud in the Women’s Four Final at Tokyo Sea Forest Waterway.

The Irish crew finished the gruelling 2,000m race in a blaze of glory to finish a brilliant third behind the Australians, the World champions, and the Netherlands, the European champions.

In helping to collect Ireland’s first medal of the Tokyo Olympics, Keogh and Murtagh have become Galway history makers at the highest level of all.

It was an incredible race by an incredible crew. But it wasn’t all plain sailing in lane two. Ireland are renowned for slow starts, but even by their standards the first 500 metres was worrying.

The crew slipped further behind after at the 1,000-metre mark, from fourth to fifth place. But they’re renowned too for strong finishes – and that’s what they delivered.
