Junior season may not resume after FAI refuses to allow extensions
By Mike Rafferty
The last games played in the Galway and District League took place last October and with the lifting of the various restrictions at different stages, the schoolboys and schoolgirls were allowed to return to training first, with the adults following two weeks ago.
All of this was leading to a return of competitive games from June 7 and with the fixtures all scheduled on the Galway FA website, everything was in order for the games to begin.
That was, however, until someone in the FAI decided to message all the various leagues all over the country on Monday and advise them that it was withdrawing permission for a return to action.
This decision was apparently made without the full backing or knowledge of some of the FAI officers, and without consultation with any of the about 12 leagues around the country that are still hoping to finish out a season by the end of July.
The Galway FA had scheduled a one-round league, so everyone would get some game time, before having the month of August off and then returning in September for the start of the 2021/2022 season.
However, the FAI message was simple: it was not allowing any extension to leagues to finish the 2020/2021 season, which has started in selected counties all over the country.
Also, in line with regulation 18.2, the Board has approved that the 2021/2022 Youths and Adult season, may commence early from June 7.
