Home win over Wexford will see Galway United join table toppers Cork City

THE League of Ireland First Division campaign reaches the one-quarter mark with the completion of this weekend’s round of games, and it could end with Galway United sitting joint top of the table if they do the business against Wexford FC at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday (5pm).
The club has taken the sensible decision to move the game from its traditional Friday night slot to avoid a clash with Connacht’s Champions Cup game at home to Leinster, giving sports fans the chance to take in both games.
It also gives United a chance to see if the big attendance for the last game it played on a Saturday evening, the play-off semi-final against Bray Wanderers last season, was down to the status of the game or if the fact it is a better fit for fans, especially families.
It is believed the crowd and atmosphere at a game in front of a full official capacity of 3,700 people played at least some part in Luke Comer making the decision to seek a greater role in the club through an ownership that he and his brother and fellow club sponsor, Brian, were given the green light to pursue last week.
United manager John Caulfield will certainly hope for a more ‘relaxed’ atmosphere in the stands this Saturday compared to last weekend’s hard-fought win over Cobh Ramblers, though he admits his players have their own role to play in that as well.
“The crowd was getting edgy the last 10 minutes, but that happens. It certainly wasn’t a fluid performance but at the end of the day we needed three points and we got that.
