Growing involvement in family business plays a role in Carty's decison to sign new contract

Jack Carty will be a fixture in the Connacht 10 jersey until 2025 after signing a new three-year deal with the province, a deal which should see him both break into the 200-appearance club with Connacht, and also see him smash Eric Elwood’s all-time points record.
Carty (29) put pen to paper on the new deal over the weekend, and the Roscommon native says he is delighted to commit to another three years with his native province, especially as he feels there is something special brewing out West.
“The main feeling is one of excitement. Look, being on the periphery of the Irish team, people maybe assumed I would look to move, but the main thing for me is that I felt I was getting better as a player and better as a leader with Connacht, and being closer to family as well, you can’t measure that somewhere else.
“It really was a pretty clear-cut decision for myself, I enjoy where I am and I am excited about where we could be going. In terms of the group and squad of players we have here now, I would say it is every bit as good as the squad in 2016 [when Connacht won the league].
“That’s the exciting part for me, and then there is new pitch hopefully going in in the next year or so, and then there is the stadium [redevelopment plans], so you put all them things together, if it was something that you didn’t stay it would probably be something that you would end up regretting, considering everything that is cooking at the moment,” he said this week.
The out-half has made 164 appearances for his home province since his debut when coming off the bench as a replacement for full-back, Gavin Duffy, in a 27-17 defeat away to Glasgow in September 2012.
Carty, who was named on the PRO14 Team of the Year both in 2018/19 and again in 2020/21, now looks set to break through the 200-game barrier for Connacht after signing the new contract, and is also in line to becoming Connacht’s record points scorer. He currently sits second in that table on 968 points, 70 shy of Eric Elwood’s record of 1,038 points, and that will surely fall to Carty this season.
