ROCK Bottom. There have been a lot of ups and downs in the history of Galway United but in its 41 seasons of League of Ireland football under the guises of Rovers, United or just plain Galway, the club has never been at the foot of Irish football looking up at every single team in the country.
The Terryland faithful have battled on through many turmoils, both on and off the pitch, in support of their local club, but no supporter in their darkest nightmares could have foreseen United sinking so low within the ranks of Irish football.
The opposition might change but the excuse of a young and inexperienced squad doesn’t, and it’s beginning to fall on deaf ears, once more United losing by a single goal, resulting in Alan Murphy’s troops not picking up a single point from their opening round of home fixtures. A plight which only adds more unneeded pressure to a team low on confidence.
They fell behind inside the opening 10 minutes courtesy of a Jaze Kabia penalty before a penalty of their own from Vinny Faherty on the half hour levelled the tie. However, an own goal on the cusp of half time from Maurice Nugent sapped all momentum and they would never truly recover.
With Kevin Horgan injured and Andreas Werner unavailable, the Tribesmen had to rely on third choice James Tierney between the sticks, and his credentials were tested early on when called upon to save a penalty eight minutes into his first start for the club.
