Galway Utd face daunting start to the new season

It’s better to arrive late to the party than not arrive at all, but Galway United know a hostile reception awaits them when they rock up to Turners Cross this Friday to take on Cork City in their first game of the 2022 First Division season (7.45pm).
The new season got underway last weekend, but United were the odd-ones-out in the nine-team First Division and so were left kicking their heels while the other 18 clubs in the country got to dust off the cobwebs of the off-season.
Well, not all of them, as Cobh Ramblers and Longford Town also got to sit back and watch the opening weekend from the stands after their meeting on the Strokestown Road was called off due to a frozen pitch.
Three First Division games did go ahead, and the results from those games leave United in no doubt as to the scale of difficulty facing them this season, with Waterford, Treaty United, and Cork City, all recording thumping victories.
Waterford FC were 5-2 winners away to Athlone Town; Treaty United were 5-1 winners away to Wexford FC; and most emphatic of all, Cork City were 6-0 winners away to Bray Wanderers. United manager John Caulfield was at that game in the Carlisle Grounds, and he was impressed by what he saw from the visiting team.
“I think we all know Cork will be challenging this year. They have recruited well, bringing in [Ally] Gilchrist and Kevin O’Connor from Shelbourne and they brought [Barry] Coffey back from Celtic.
“We know all about Ruairi Keating, and they have [Dylan] McGlade as well, he hit a hat-trick in Bray – they are much stronger than they were last year,” he says.
