Galway set for league battles with Clare and Limerick

2020 All-Ireland senior camogie finalists Galway will be favourites to advance to the National League Division 1 semi-finals, after they were grouped with Munster sides, Clare and Limerick.
Cathal Murray’s charges commence the league campaign with a home game against Clare on Saturday, May 15, before they face Limerick away two weeks later (Saturday, May 29). The other two big hitters, Cork and All-Ireland champions Kilkenny, are in Group 2 & 3 respectively.
There are three groups of three teams in Division 1, with the top team in each entering a draw to see which two should advance directly to the semi-finals.
The group winner not drawn will have to face into the June 5/6 quarter-finals, for which the second team in each group will qualify. The bottom team in the groups enter the relegation play-offs.
2019 National League and All-Ireland winners Galway, now under a revamped management team, will be expected to top their group and a favourable draw should see them qualify for the semi-finals on June 12/13t The final is pencilled in for the weekend of June 19/20
In their last meeting against Limerick in the early rounds of the 2020 National League (subsequently rendered null and void by Covid), the Tribeswomen recorded a 4-13 to 0-7 victory, with Catherine Finnerty (2), Niamh Hanniffy and Noreen Coen netting the goals. The year previous they defeated Limerick 2-14 to 0-4 in the league semi-finals.
Their last meeting against Clare was in the 2018 All-Ireland championship, when Galway defeated the Banner women on a 1-16 to 0-9 score-line in Cathal Murray’s first competitive game in charge following the resignation of previous boss, Tony O’Donovan.
While there is no word as of yet when the All-Ireland series will be held, the Camogie Association did previously indicate a return to club action before the championship gets underway. This would be contrary to the GAA’s plans and, indeed, the mood of many players, who have called for a split season.
