You need to be ‘original’ but you also need to be ‘bold’ if you stand any chance of winning

With the biggest day of the Galway Races fast approaching, we take a look back at the outfits that stole the show on previous Ladies Days.

Fashion and flair will be more important than any type of filly on the track as one of the most anticipated events on the social calendar takes place on the Thursday of Ballybrit.

Ella & Jo will sponsor the Best Dressed competition for the second year running in the 157th year of the Summer Festival.

Local lady Megan Cunniss took home the coveted title last year as well as the nice cash prize of ten thousand euro.

The Newcastle woman followed the Ella & Jo advice of “bold and original” and said that being from Galway and winning the title of Best Dressed here “means so much to me”.

She wore a sleeveless white dress with black buttons which was paired with a black and white clutch bag from Mala Hire as well as black gloves and black and white stiletto heels, topping off the look with a Millinery By Mairéad hat.

Here’s a look at the winners from last year right down to 2019:

The judging panel for Ladies Day this year is led by another Galway girl in Laura Fox as well as Galway Races regular Mandy Maher who returns as Head Judge and joined by Ella & Jo co-founder Charlene Flanagan.

Laura said “I’m delighted to be taking on the role as judge for Ladies Day this year, it’s such an honour. I’ve been going to the Galway Races for years growing up in Galway, so it feels really special to be part of it in a new way.

“There’s always such an amazing buzz around Ladies Day and the style is next level every year. I can’t wait to see all the looks, the creativity and the personality people bring. It’s always such a fun, glamorous day and I’m so excited to be part of it.”

Michael Moloney, CEO of the Galway Races, added: “On behalf of everyone at Galway Races, I’m delighted to welcome Laura Fox as our Ladies Day guest judge this year.

“As a proud Galway native, it’s especially fitting to have Laura join us at Ballybrit, bringing a real sense of homegrown style and personality to the occasion. Ladies Day is always one of the highlights of race week, celebrating fashion, creativity, and confidence, and we have no doubt that Laura will add something truly special.

“We’re very much looking forward to working with her and to another unforgettable Race Week.”
