It may not be quite on the scale of the Volvo Ocean Race – but Galway is set for another maritime bonanza as one of the most prestigious yacht races takes in a stopover here this summer.

Galway Bay Sailing Club is hosting the Classic Round Britain and Ireland Race Galway Stopover in late May and early June. The race is entering its 56th year, and it is one of the best known on the international sailing calendar.

This prestigious and historical race – organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club of Plymouth – will involve approximately 40 boats; many of them two-handed.

They are sailing a gruelling course from Plymouth to Galway to Lerwick in the Shetland Islands to Blythe, on the East coast of England, and back to Plymouth.

Each boat will stop for a break of 48 hours at each port before continuing their 2,000-mile voyage.

This week Galway Bay Sailing Club hosted Adrian Gray, Rear Commodore Oceanic and race director of Royal Western Yacht Club, the organizers of the race.

In addition to detailed discussions and planning, both Adrian and Commodore Johnny Shorten and the organising team of Nigel Moss, Fergal Lyons and Olga Scully met with Captain Brian Sheridan, Harbourmaster of the Port of Galway for in-depth planning of the logistics and organisation of the event.

And if you are interested in participating in the race, there are spaces remaining – and the organisers would love to see an Irish boat competing in this epic adventure.
