Dominick Street: Galway City Council has ordered revisions to plan for 43-bed hotel.

The backer of plans for a 43-bed hotel on Dominick Street has been sent back to the drawing board by the Chief Fire Officer, who said the building would not comply with fire safety regulations.

Eoin Carroll, of Carrolls Inns Ltd, had sought permission for the development on the sites of numbers 39, 41 and 43 Dominick Street Lower (which date back to the 1820s) which would involve alterations and extensions to the protected structures to make way for a hotel, bar, restaurant and coffee dock.

However, planners said the Chief Fire Officer (CFO) advised them that the proposals would not comply with fire safety regulations in relation to the means of escape and fire access.

Mr Carroll was told to liaise with the CFO and submit revised proposals.

Planners have also queried the extent to which restoration works have already been carried out on the buildings and pointed out that the new ‘shopfront’ does not appear to respect the character of the building.

They have also sought clarification on the entrance door – through the archway – and how it will operate if it is to be the primary access to the hotel, how servicing and deliveries will operate, and how noise from the keg drop can be mitigated.
