Defeat for all four in league action

IT was a disappointing week for the four Galway sides in Basketball Ireland league action, with all of them going down to defeat.

A stunning full-court buzzer-beating 3-pointer from team captain, Joseph Coughlan, wasn’t enough to dig Titans out of a hole against visiting Tolka Rovers in their Men’s Division 1 clash in Ballinfoile on Saturday evening; while NUIG Maree saw their proud unbeaten home run come to an end at the hands of Neptune in the Men’s Super League a short time later.

Moycullen suffered a second successive heavy defeat when shipping a 41-point loss away to newly-crowned cup champions Tralee Warriors; while Women’s Division 1 Cup champions, NUIG Mystics, also suffered a defeat on the road, going down to Limerick Sport Huskies on Tuesday night to see their 11-game winning run come to an end.

MEN’S DIVISION 1

Titans 60

Tolka Rovers 69

Joseph Coughlan is probably one of the youngest captains across the four national leagues, but the 18-years-old lets his basketball do the talking, and on Saturday night it didn’t so much talk as scream with a stunning full-court shot that helped swing momentum his side’s way.

Titans were trailing 58-45 to Tolka Rovers with just 1.21 seconds left in the third quarter when Coughlan got his hands on the ball close to his own baseline. He took one look before launching a monstrous shot towards the Tolka Rovers basket, and the ball hit nothing but net as it dropped through the 18-inch rim at the far end of the court.

The officials weren’t sure if he had got the shot off in time, and in fact had waved away the score before talking it out, and with input from visiting head coach Gerlad Kennedy, they reversed their decision and allowed the score to stand.
