Connacht eager to make up for lost time against Italians
By Rob Murphy
ALL going well, Connacht are due to take on Benetton this Friday at the Sportsground (7:35). ‘All going well’ has to be the phrase after last weekend became the third time in eight short weeks where a game involving the westerners was called off at late notice. Similar to before, it was an issue in the opposition camp, a case of Covid-19 within the Ospreys squad, that put an end to the fixture.
This weekend’s game is a re-fixture from round five when Benetton had to withdraw from the contest in Galway. They’ve since got back on track in terms of getting games played but after a number of impressive seasons in recent years, the disrupted campaign has not been kind to the men from Treviso as they are yet to win a game after six rounds of action.
For Connacht, the form lines are a little better but they could have done with more games. They only found out about Saturday’s cancellation 24 hours beforehand with the captain’s run session having been completed that morning. After the ups and downs of previous rounds, hopes had been high that two good performances against the Ospreys and Benetton could have steadied the ship. Attack coach Nigel Carolan noted this at Tuesday’s press conference.
“Momentum is an important word at the moment, and we’re missing the chance to develop it with games being cancelled. We have had our inconsistencies, games like Cardiff and Scarlets along the way, so we certainly would have taken a lot of confidence from the win over Zebre. We were very pleased with it and we were hoping to roll that into the Ospreys game.
