ON Sunday last, they played side by side on adjoining pitches at Millar’s Lane in their quest for promotion and, indeed, the honour of becoming Western Hygiene Supplies Second Division champions.

Leaders Bohemians and second placed Medtronic/Merlin Woods eventually recorded narrow victories over two teams who never gave them an inch as they saw off the challenges of relegation threatened Dynamo Blues and Knocknacarra.

Having gained a two goal advantage by the start of the second half, it looked like it was enough for Bohemians, but they were certainly put to the pin of their collar in the latter stages to hold off a Dynamo Blues side who pulled one back on the resumption, but couldn’t get any closer in a 2-1 defeat.

Meanwhile, Medtronic/Merlin Woods were having even greater difficulties as they had to come from behind twice before seeing off Knocknacarra by 3-2, courtesy of a late Shane Costello winner.

Full of confidence, the home side were quickly into their stride and took an early lead when Oskar Nowak scored from the rebound after a Dave Cubbard penalty was saved by Shane Stankard.

The held that advantage until the interval, but made it 2-0 on 46 minutes when John Sangi put Sean Guinan away and the striker applied the perfect finish past Stankard. The reality is that the table toppers would have been expected to pull away, but the opposite happened as Blues took over and looked by far the more threatening side in the last half hour.

Leon Tighe reduced the arrears to 2-1 with a low drive from just inside the box and only the width of a post denied them an equaliser when a Christian Ryan effort struck the woodwork. Home custodian Andreas Binder was by now by far the busier and a smart reflex stop kept out a pile driver from Ross Tierney in the best of his saves. Just Sangi threatened at the other end, but his shot went just over the crossbar in the closing stages.
