Galway city road closed off until December

The scheme will require a road closure with works scheduled to operate between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday
Nearly a kilometre of water mains is set to be upgraded in the Bushypark area of Galway city under a new programme of works that will close a local road until December.
The project involves upsizing 923 metres of existing water mains along the Ballagh Road, stretching from its junction with the N59 to the junction with the Gortacleva Road.
The works are being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s Accelerated Growth Programme, which targets public water network capacity in areas experiencing high housing demand to support new developments while improving supply resilience for existing customers.
The scheme will require a road closure along the Ballagh Road, with works scheduled to operate between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Uisce Éireann said work areas will be restricted to short sections at a time to reduce disruption, with diversion routes signposted and local and emergency access maintained throughout.
Programme Manager Enda Mac Namara said the upgrade would improve drinking water services and support future development across Bushypark and Tonabrocky.
“We are delighted to be commencing works on this programme of mains upsizing on the Ballagh Road,” he said.
“This investment will boost the capacity of the water network in the Bushypark and Tonabrocky areas of Galway and will ensure that the network is equipped to service future housing growth and development in the surrounding area.
“These works will also provide tangible benefits for existing customers in the area, by improving the reliability of the supply and reducing the risk of operational issues moving forward.”
The project will be undertaken by Farrans Construction on behalf of the utility. Works are due to begin next week and are expected to be completed by December.
