Galway Bay algae used for new drug delivery system
Galway Bay fm newsroom - Researchers at NUI Galway are developing a novel drug-delivery system based on harnessing diatoms - microscopic algae that grow in the waters of Galway Bay.
The tiny organism can be 'tricked' into taking up a variety of drugs and researchers are working on finding a way to use drug-modified diatoms for drug delivery. The organisms themselves may potentially be used to carry medications to tumours and diseased tissues without causing undesirable side-effects.
