The Irish Defence Forces Explosives team carried out a controlled explosion

Galway homes were evacuated on Monday after a grenade was discovered.

Parts of Portumna were sealed off after the find with the Irish Defence Forces Explosive team carrying out a controlled explosion.

The suspect device was described as “historical in nature” but thankfully the explosion was successful and no injuries were reported.

A garda spokesman told Galway Live: "Gardaí attended the scene following the discovery of a suspect device in an area behind residential properties at Abbey Street, Portumna, Co Galway this afternoon, Monday 27th July 2026.

"A number of properties were evacuated and a cordon was put in place.”

He added: "The Irish Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit attended and carried out a controlled explosion on a grenade, which was historical in nature.

"The occupants of the residences which were evacuated have since been allowed to return to their properties and the cordon has been lifted. There were no reports of injuries or damage."
