Adult Literacy Tutors in Galway are coming together to raise concerns over their service. They've prompted the Dublin-based Basic Education Tutors Association and SIPTU to host a meeting next week. They're claiming they're being forced to claim social welfare during the summer and be re-interviewed for jobs they've held for many years. The tutors are employed by the VECs and are the main providers of adult literacy services for asylum-seekers and other newcomers to Galway. The meeting takes place on Thursday 1st of May at 7.30pm in Days Hotel, Dublin Road. SIPTU organiser Paul Hardy says adult literacy services must continue through the summer if Government targets to improve literacy rates by 2016 are to be met.
