GAELTACHT REVAMP COULD SEE PARTS OF CITY LOSE GAELTACHT STATUS

Date Published: 24-Mar-2008
Parts of Galway city could lose their Gaeltacht status if the Government were to apply new linguistic criteria to redraw the Gaeltacht boundaries. Connemara-based Gaeltacht expert Donnacha Ó hEallaithe has applied the new linguistic criteria to the latest Census figures to find out the true extent of the Gaeltacht boundaries today. He's discovered that only 16,000 people would remain in the Galway Gaeltacht if it's boundaries are redrawn.
