A decision on plans that could significantly change one of Galway's busiest city-centre locations is due in September.

The Cross Street Rejuvenation Project proposes a major upgrade of Cross Street, Middle Street, Abbeygate Street Lower, Buttermilk Lane and Buttermilk Walk.

The plans include new paving, lighting, seating, planting and other public realm improvements. However, the proposal is also likely to reignite debate over pedestrianisation in the city centre.

Under the plans outlined by Galway City Council, Cross Street, Abbeygate Street and Middle Street could be pedestrianised, either in full or during certain periods, creating more room for walking, outdoor dining, markets and events.

The project also sets out how the streets could function under normal traffic conditions, during pedestrianised periods, and during festivals or market days.

Council officials say the scheme intends to shift the balance away from traffic toward pedestrians while improving safety, accessibility and the area's overall appearance.

Located in the heart of Galway's medieval centre and the Latin Quarter, the area is one of the city's busiest pedestrian routes and a focal point for businesses, tourism and cultural activity - peaking perhaps during the annual Galway International Arts Festival and Galway Race Week.

The plans will go on public display until June 26, with submissions accepted until July 10. A report on the consultation process will then be prepared before the proposal comes before councillors for a decision at their September meeting.
