FUNDING CONFIRMED FOR NEW WATER SUPPLY FOR ROUNDSTONE

Environment minister John Gormley has given the go-ahead for a new water supply for Roundstone. He's approved 3.24 million euro in funding to bring water from the Carna/Kilkieran Water Treatment plant which has just been upgraded, to the popular Connemara village.Locals have been boiling water from their existing supply since last month's cryptosporidium outbreak. Today's announcement clears the way for Galway County council to build over 10 kilometres of a new mains pipe, a new 400 metre cubed water reservoir and some upgrading of the existing water supply network. However it's highly likely the boil water notice will remain in place until that infrastructure has been built. Connemara county councillor Josie Conneely says it's a long-term solution to the water problems in Roundstone.
