The strong medical devices industry in Galway is fuelling a surge in points at both colleges in Galway.
Points for biotechnology courses at NUIG and GMIT have soared this year, with points for one course rising by up to 200 points.
Biotechnology at NUIG rose by 30 points to 370 and Biopharmaceutical Chemistry rose by 65 points to 395.
Applied Biology and Biopharmaceutical Science at GMIT is up by 25 points to 330, while Science also rose by 30 points to 330.
But perhaps the steepest rise at NUIG was in Electronic Innovation Engineering which rose by 200 points to 560 this year.
