FIREARM RECOVERED NEAR RENVILLE PIER ORANMORE

Date Published: 15-Jan-2013

An investigation has been launched following the discovery of a firearm on Renville Pier this afternoon.

The find was made by a member of the public who then alerted Oranmore Garda Station at approximately 2 this afternoon.

The weapon was discovered at low tide and initial investigations suggest that it was not in the water for a long period of time.

The pump action firearm which has a sawn off handle will now be sent to the Phoenix Park Garda Forensics Unit in Dublin where it will be examined in a bid to trace its registration.

This will assist Gardai to find out whether it was legally or illegally held.
