A DEVASTATING first-half display paved the way for Castlegar to coast to victory over Carnmore and record their second win in Group C of the Galway senior hurling championship at Kenny Park, Athenry on Sunday evening.
Castlegar are sponsored this year by a local pharmacy, but it will definitely be the Carnmore side and their mentors that will require some form of medication after a humiliating defeat at the hands of their near neighbours.
As one sided a clash as you are likely to see was as good as over by the end of the first quarter such was Castlegar’s superiority in all sectors of the park. Picking off scores at their leisure, with Ger Farragher the tormentor-in-chief, Carnmore were at sixes and sevens and unable to rally against the green and white tide that overran them.
Farragher, on the crest of a wave confidence-wise after picking up a National League winners’ medal and Vodafone April Player of the Month award within the space of a few days, got off to a somewhat sluggish start with a missed free, but soon had 1-4 to his name in the blink of an eye as Castlegar lorded the midfield duels.
Carnmore’s Barry Hanley had opened the scoring three minutes in with a free, but it was soon one-way traffic as Farragher clipped over a fine score from distance before fortuitously finding the net when a free from inside his own half bounced in front of the square amid a crowd of players and deceived Carnmore ‘keeper Damien Fahy.
