Teagasc study highlights the importance of a good diet for people as they get older

MIDDLE-aged and older people are now aware enough of the importance of maintaining protein levels in their diets, according to the findings of a recent Teagasc survey.
The Teagasc study highlights the importance of consuming sufficient dietary protein in order to optimise [make the most of] healthy ageing.
Carried out on 513 adults aged between 45 and 81, the survey indicated that 63% of respondents believed that older people do not more protein than younger age groups.
As well as that, over one of three people surveyed (36%) did not perceive protein as being an important of their daily diets.
The Teagasc research and study – carried out by Caoileann Murphy, Sinéad McCarthy, Helen Roche and Clare Corish – also pointed out the link between ageing and muscle loss.
“Beginning in our 40s, we start to lose 1% of our muscle mass and 2% to 3% of our strength per year. Over time, this can lead to a disease called sarcopenia, which is characterised by low muscle mass and strength.
“This can impair mobility, making it more difficult to independently perform daily physical tasks. Furthermore, it increases the risk of falls, fractures, poor quality of life, and the need for long-term care,” the study emphasises.
In terms of preventing the onset of this disease, the most effective approach is regular physical exercise (especially appropriate lifting exercises) accompanied by a nutritious diet providing adequate protein, the study states.
