‘Shop around’ for your fertilisers

A DIFFERENCE of up to €35 per tonne in the prices farmers are paying for fertilisers has emerged in an IFA survey carried out across the country over the month of January.
The biggest price discrepancy came in the sale of CAN with a €35 per tonne differential – the cheapest being €210 and the dearest €245.
The second largest price gap emerged with another popular ‘all-round’ fertiliser – 10-10-20 – which ranged in price from €340 to €370 per tonne, a gap of €30.
Protected Urea ranged in price from €350 to €375 per tonne – a difference of €25 – while there was a €20 difference in granular Urea, €315 per tonne as against €335.
Pasture Sward varied in price from €310 to €330 – a difference of €20 – while the gap was even higher (€25) for Cut Sward, cheapest at €320 and most expensive at €345.
The price difference wasn’t as great for SulCan (€15) – €205 as against €215 – while the tightest pricing of all the fertilisers was for 18-6-12 with just a €10 gap, €320 and €330.
However, the slightly worrying trend for farmers is that since the survey was carried out in January, fertiliser prices have increased by about €20 to €30 per tonne across the range.
IFA Farm Business and Inputs Chairperson, Rose Mary McDonagh, said that since the beginning of February there have been ‘aggressive price hikes’, with increases of €30 per tonne common across most fertilisers, despite strong supply.
