Farming future on the line
A ‘FULL-HOUSE’ of around 300 farmers turned out on Monday night for a face-to-face meeting with Galway Oireachtas representatives on critical issues coming down the track for farming in Ireland.
The meeting – chaired by Galway IFA Chairperson, Anne Mitchell – heard contributions from a number of IFA representatives and replies from TDs and Senators in attendance.
Among the politicians in attendance were TDs Hildegarde Naughton, Anne Rabbitte, Seán Canney, Kieran Cannon and Mairead Farrell as well as senators Seán Kyne and Aisling Dolan along with local councillors Michael Connolly and Shelly Herterich Quinn.
The problems facing farmers as regards the new CAP, the Nitrates Regulations and Climate Change were addressed by IFA representatives Henry Walsh (Environment); Michael Haverty (Livestock); Noel Murphy (Dairy); Peter Gohery (Rural Development); Paul O’Brien (National Environmental Chair); Martin Murphy (National Council Rep); Rose Mary McDonagh (Farm Business) and Pat Murphy (Connacht Chair).
All of the TDs and Senators replied to the IFA presentations and pledged to do everything they could to ensure that the economic future of farming and the rural economy in the West of Ireland would be protected over the coming years.
