Farmers take to streets as fears grow

THE gloves are off in the battle by farmers to survive a whole range of threats facing them including the new CAP and nitrates regulations, with four major rallies being held across the country this Friday (Oct. 8).

Farmers from the five Connacht counties have been asked ‘to turn out in strength’ for the western rally that will be held outside the Hyde Park GAA centre in Roscommon with assembly at 11am followed by an address from IFA President, Tim Cullinan, at 11.30am.

Before that the IFA President will address a rally of Ulster farmers in Cavan and after the Connacht gathering he will then travel to Portlaoise and then on to Cork for the final rally that evening.

This week, Tim Cullinan warned, that farmers were being treated as ‘low hanging fruit’ while at the same time ‘the red carpet was being rolled out energy guzzling multinationals’ with food, peat and timber being imported from far less efficient countries than Ireland.

The IFA President that his association was ‘sounding an alarm’ that unless there was engagement, negotiations and a coherent plan for the future of agriculture in Ireland, farming and food production in this country would be unrecognizable.

Galway IFA Chairperson, Anne Mitchell, told the Farming Tribune those farmers were neither ‘being listened to or engaged with’ in terms of the road ahead for Irish farming.

“Make no mistake about it but this is a critical time for the future of farming not only in the West of Ireland but all across the country.
