Budget case is made to Government

THE perilous position of Irish farming – brought about by increasing regulation, Brexit issues and cuts in direct payments – has been highlighted in the IFA’s pre-Budget 2022 submission.

IFA Farm Business Committee Chair, Mary Rose McDonagh (Headford), said that the message from farmers to Government since their ‘Day of Action’ last June had not changed.

She said that for the coming days and weeks, IFA officers would be meeting with TDs and Senators across the country to highlight the current difficulties faced by Irish farmers.

“The sustainable growth of our sector needs policies that encourage investment at farm level, and recognise the role of agriculture in achieving balanced regional development and viable farm incomes.

"We need significant taxation supports, in particular through investment in emissions-efficient equipment and the removal of discrimination in our tax system for the self-employed," said Mary Rose McDonagh.

She added that it was critical for schemes such ANCs, GLAS, TAMS, BDGP, Sheep Welfare, Organic Farming, Suckler Cow and EWE premiums to be fully supported financially by the Government.

IFA Rural Development Chairman, Michael Biggins, said that the farm schemes must remain a central part of Government policy and especially so for the low-income drystock sector.
