THE Galway Beef Plan Movement (GBPM) have this week promised a resurgence in their efforts and a higher profile in the coming months in their battle to secure better deals for cattle farmers.

In a statement issued this week, GPPM, said that following the serving of injunctions on its members during the beef protests, members of the movement ‘had to reluctantly take a backseat’ as regards what was going on.

Over recent weeks, there has been growing frustration among farmers at the difficulty in getting cattle processed at the meat plants following the protests of the late Summer/early Autumn period.  This week, Galway Beef Plan, promised to start coming back out in force and to ‘make plenty of headlines’ over the coming months.

“While we have seen other protests taking place, Galway Beef Plan have been working away in the background with representatives attending negotiations and departmental meetings, putting a plan in place to ensure that the work of the Task Force [Beef] takes place,” GBPM state.

According to GBPM, one of their most recent projects was in the putting together of a detailed request to Bord Bia seeking full details of the ‘Chinese Beef Deal’.

They said that farmers were seeking clarification and transparency on the Chinese deal as regards how much of Bord Bia’s budget was spent on this deal; the target tonnage for China; clarity as to the sourcing of the beef; the type of cuts they want; and the ‘fifth quarter’ situation.
