The European Investment Bank has provided loan approval in principle of up to one hundred and seventy million euro for the Gort to Tuam phase of the Atlantic Corridor.

The Department of Transport has confirmed that the EIB will provide this funding as part of a wider initiative by the investment bank to improve infrastructure in the country.

Work was due to begin on the €530 million Gort-Tuam route in early 2010, but BAM Balfour Beatty, the private partner pulled out because of difficulties raising the necessary funding.

Tuam County Councillor Tom McHugh has welcomed news of the funding as the new road would open parts of north Galway to the rest of the country, and could result in inward investment and jobs for the region.

Cllr McHugh says the council is ready to sign contracts and get the works started.
