Dublin outfit Aslan, who play Monroe’s Live on Friday, April 13, mark their 30th anniversary this year and the quintet will celebrate the event with a show in Tallaght Stadium.

The group have had many ups and downs during their career, from touring the US to being dropped by a major label. But the focal point is Christy Dignam, whose past battles with drug addiction are well documented.

“I think that’s part of the story of Aslan,” says guitarist Billy. “Christy’s been very honest about it; he had a drug problem. There was no point in trying to hide that. Aslan are a very honest band. We’ve done everything a band can do, including breaking up and getting back together.”

The band are constantly touring these days and, in total, employ eight people year round.

“There’s five in the band and three crew – a sound man, a truck driver and a roadie,” says Billy. “It’s fairly compact. Especially when we go away, we need our own crew to set the gear up. Smokie does sound, and we’ve Adam and Steve. They’ve stuck with us for years; they’re like a part of the band. It’s one big happy family travelling around!”

Ultimately, despite their woes, Aslan’s story has proven to be a redemptive one with Dignam returning to the line-up and the band scoring a massive hit with Crazy World. Their loyal following are sure to be out in force for the show in Monroe’s.

Doors 8pm, admission €15 or €12 on monroes.ie.
