A 24-year-old Dublin man is to appear before Harristown District Court today in connection with a spate of burglaries across parts of rural North Galway and South Mayo in recent weeks.

Patrick O’Donoghue, of 6 Sundale Close,Tallaght, appeared in custody and on crutches before Spiddal District Court yesterday.

Garda John Newell gave evidence of arresting O’Donoghue at University College Hospital, Galway on Wednesday and of detaining him under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

O’Donoghue, who suffered a broken hip and fingers when a car in which he was travelling crashed at Belmont, Milltown, Tuam on December 6, appeared on crutches before the court.

Gardai strenuously objected to a bail application made in court by O’Donoghue’s barrister, Rachel O’Toole, instructed by Howell solicitors in Dublin.

Judge Fahy refused bail and she remanded O’Donoghue in custody to appear before Harristown District Court today.
