Drain maintenance scheme for South Galway this summer

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A drain maintenance scheme is to be carried out in South Galway this summer to assist in flood relief efforts.

Minster Brian Hayes who has special responsibility for the Office of Public Works announced the works when he attended a meeting with concerned locals in Ardrahan today.

The area and many neighbouring areas of South Galway were devastated by floods in February following prolonged periods of heavy rainfall.

The Minister of State also traveled to Kilcolgan and Athenry during his tour of flood prone areas this morning.

Concerned residents were also advised that a new application is to be submitted to An Bord Pleanála by summer for the Dunkellin drainage scheme which is central to flood alleviation in the area.

Minister Hayes told our reporter Antoinette Giblin that the local authority will be supported by the OPW in carrying out the summer maintenance works in the interim.
