Disciplinary process at UHG following 3 reports into Savita's death
Bill Maher’s comments come following a special board meeting of the group where the 11 members present discussed the recommendations from three reports from 7 last evening until almost 1am.
31 year old Savita died on October 28th last, seven days after her admission to a gynaecology ward.
A HIQA report into the death was published last week and found there was a fundamental failure to provide basic care at University Hospital Galway.
The authority identified that there was a general lack of provision of basic fundamental care, for example not following up on blood tests.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm news at a special media briefing in UHG today, CEO Bill Maher said an established disciplinary process will now be applied.
The CEO also said that all HIQA recommendations will be implemented with an external review after 12 months and a public board meeting.
Bill Maher said the death of Savita Halappanavar had a devastating effect not just on her husband, family and friends but also on many people working at UHG.
It, he added, also had a devastating effect on the trust that patients have in services.
To help restore public confidence, in addition to the disciplinary process, the inquest transcripts and findings, and the HSE and HIQA reports are to be referred to both the Irish Medical Council and the Nursing and Midwifery Board.
