Department of Agriculture pays out 130 thousand to county council for horse seizures
Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Department of Agriculture has paid out over 130 thousand euro to Galway county council so far this year to deal with stray horses.
It's one of the highest allocations paid to a local authority to deal with the problem, and is over ten times higher than the 11 thousand paid out last year.
295 horses have been seized in the county so far this year, compared to 84 for the whole of 2012.
Dublin city council has received the most money to date at 176 thousand euro.
Nationally, 1.8 million has been allocated to local authorities with almost 3 thousand 300 hundred abandoned horse seizures.
The figures were released to Galway Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh this week following a direct request to the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Senator Ó Clochartaigh says more needs to be done to tackle the problem.
