Culture of innovation and collaboration plays key role in bringing industry west
A “culture of innovation and collaboration” has helped to underpin Galway’s ability to attract foreign investment and create jobs, according to the IDA’s West Regional Business Development Manager.
Ricky Conneely told the Connacht Tribune it is this attribute across the region that has strengthened Galway’s business ecosystem and led FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) client companies to look at the city and county as a base.
But he again warned that investment in critical infrastructure – more housing, an improved bus system, progress on the Galway City Ring Road and better walking and cycling facilities – is needed to maintain competitiveness.
“Looking toward 2024, continued investment in critical infrastructure is necessary to maintain the competitiveness of Galway’s FDI offering and to increase the county’s chances of attracting further investment.
“The delivery of increased residential supply and the roll out of plans for the key residential sites of scale in the city need to be prioritised in 2024 alongside the critical infrastructure highlighted in the Galway transport strategy, including progress on the Galway City Ring Road, improved city centre access, an improved bus system and better walking and cycling infrastructure remain key factors in winning and retaining FDI.
He said the revamp of Ceannt Station, which begins this month, is strongly welcomed as “it will ensure [Ceannt] becomes an expanded and integrated transport hub in the heart of Galway”.
The overhaul will involve increasing the number of platforms from two to five, new shops, a new waiting area, toilets and ticket office and provision for future bus bay expansion.
