MORE serious charges may be brought against a 29-year-old man charged in connection with an alleged violent burglary in Newcastle earlier this year.

Daniel Farrell, with an address at 15 the Gables, St Brigid's Road, Portumna, appeared before Galway District Court last week, facing a single charge contrary to Section 12 of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.

The charge alleges that on February 2, 2026, Farrell entered a property at Greenview Heights, Newcastle as a trespasser and committed assault and criminal damage.

Sergeant Damien Prendergast told the court the case is a ‘complex matter’ and directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions remain outstanding.

Sgt Prendergast said that he understands further, more serious, charges are being contemplated.

In reply to a question from Judge John King, the sergeant said the Garda file is not yet with the DPP – but he said it was at the latter stages of completion.

Judge King adjourned the case to May 11 for DPP's directions.
